The 3 Frameworks

How these 3 frameworks helped me build loyal community and 21x my sales (step by step)

It was a super-cold February in 2012: -20 Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit) outside.
February is the coldest month in Ukraine. (Its name in Ukrainian translates as “Severe”.)

I stepped into the deep snow, heading toward my next job interview,

because I’d sold all my businesses and wasted all the money on a new global business that didn’t fly.

A crazy freezing wind scorched my face.

My soul was flooded with sadness and indignation.

My eyes were blazing:

I am going to work for somebody else!
Five days a week, eight hours a day!
Like a slave!
Me! A serial entrepreneur with over 10 years of experience!
What a shame!
What the #@%$!
I hated it!

I had to escape from this nightmare!

The HR managers who talked to me saw that inner flame in my eyes.
I couldn’t hide it.

My wife says it’s easy to see what’s in my soul by looking into my eyes.

Everything looked like the end of the world.

The day I decided to sell all my local businesses and invest in this new global venture was 2 years ago…

From June 2010 till June 2015, I developed and launched 9 different products. They all died from exhaustion.

In March 2012, I learned about the Lean Startup Methodology and started to… fail faster.

Eventually, I wasted 5 years and over $150K of my and investors’ money. I had a lot of ups and downs. My experience looked like this:

In the end, I lost everything. The only thing I gained was the deepest depression in my whole life.

You probably know this picture. It’s the lifecycle of any new business:

You start with an idea, invest your time and money, and hope to succeed one day.

The orange zone is the Valley of Death. This is where 99.9% of all new businesses, including mine, die from exhaustion.

I didn’t know then about the #1 PMF framework that allows you to jump over the Valley of Death and never fall into it at all. I didn’t know it was possible. I thought it was a must for entrepreneurs to risk, lose money, and fail, and that only the most persistent win. How wrong I was!

Fast forward to November 2015, when I stumbled upon a new approach that has turned my serial failures into a myriad of wins.

The #1 PMF framework

It was November 2015. I was looking for a new growth hacking case study to share with my email subscribers and stumbled upon an article that blew my mind.

It was a story by Bryan Harris.

He managed to make $10K before creating a product!

And $220K after he actually had one.

How did he do it? He followed the #1 product/market fit framework:

Instead of starting from a ingenious idea and investing in creating a product (like I always did), he started from building an email community.

After some time, he asked his community about their #1 pain.

Then, instead of doing "customer development" = asking random people "Do you have this problem?", "Will you pay if I create this solution?", then - investing his time/money and see nobody buys it (like I always did), he just invited his loyal community to prepay him to create a course that would solve their pain. (= if you don't prepay I won't do it = won't waste my time/money)

His community prepaid him $10K for this.

I looked at this, and my jaw dropped. The concept was so simple, but the results were so different from mine. It made so much sense. Just build a community, ask them to prepay, and jump over the dreaded Valley of Death, the place where I’d been stuck for 5 years…

After he created the course, he notified the community that he was done – and his community paid him $220K more.

I shouted:

“F@##! Why I didn’t know about this approach 15 years ago when I started my IT entrepreneurship career?!!!”
Probably because else nobody knew about it, either.

I was so inspired by this framework that decided to implement it instantly.

By that time, I had already an email community of over 20K growth-hackers (more on this later). I looked for interesting hacks on different blogs and shared them on a regular basis with my community members.

So I followed the new approach by offering something as simple as a recorded 30-minute audio seminar. I wanted to see results as soon as possible. My wounded soul desperately needed to feel the taste of success.

Result: I earned $2.5K in a week.

Imagine how happy I was after 5 years of seeing only losses!

When I saw this I was shouting:

“Yeeehhaaaa! Oh God, thank you for this approach. I’ve suffered for so long! This approach is like a personal gift to me from heaven. I’m infinitely grateful!”
After some happy-dancing, I decided to repeat the process a few more times.

Result: I made over $20K while working part-time, 1-4 hours a day.

The system worked well with books, seminars, and master classes. But I wanted more.

I wanted to sell something that brought people so much value every day that they would be willing to pay me on a regular basis.

I didn’t just want to make as much money as possible. That doesn’t inspire me.

I love to hear inspiring “Thank yous” from my customers. It’s like fuel for my inner engine. When I see my students succeed, their lives changed, and new opportunities appear, I feel happiness. I feel useful. This feeling is very important to me.

I think I inherited this trait from my mom.

For almost all her adult life, she had been a teacher in one of the biggest local universities in USSR, then in Ukraine. Accounting, managerial accounting were her specializations.
It was difficult work. But she loved to teach. It was her calling.

Students considered her a very demanding, but fair and highly professional teacher.

She couldn’t stand half-assed work, and put all her love and sweat into giving her students the best she could offer.

I remember numerous students coming to our flat. My mom helped them understand what they weren’t able to fathom during regular lessons.

These were not private lessons for money.
They were help to those who really wanted to study.

Teaching was not her goal.
Her students’ results – this is what inspired her.

Eventually these students returned to my mom.
They thanked her, because after they graduated they got the jobs they had dreamed of – and could actually do it well.

I saw deep respect and gratitude in the eyes of the students, in the eyes of her colleagues, and in the eyes of the employers who hired her students.

Witnessing all this made an indelible impact on my life.

Back then, in August 2016, my goal was to find a product/service at the intersection of:

1. What I love to do.
2. What solves real pain.
3. What delivers real value on a regular basis.
4. What is demanded by my community.
5. What my community wants to pay me for every month.

So I applied the #1 framework again.

I asked my audience, and analyzed the results. It turned out people wanted to prepay me for these 3 things:

1. A step-by-step course on how to grow your email subscriber list and make money from it.
2. Personal coaching.
3. A SaaS for managing your email community and automated sales funnels.

I decided to bundle them into the 3-in-1 “Get Your 10K Email Subscribers + Earn Your 10K USD” program and invited my community to prepay for these things under these conditions:

1. It will take me 12 months to develop the course and the SaaS.
2. I would launch the first MVP of the SaaS in 3 months.
3. I will create and deliver my lessons 1-2 times a week.

On September 1st 2016, I saw $3,065 in my bank account:

These were not one-time payments. These were automated recurring payments.

The #1 PMF framework allowed me to jump over the Valley of Death and make money before I’d written a single word of the course or coded a single line of the SaaS.

After I started developing the program, instead of seeing the losses I’d grown accustomed over the last 5 years, I saw this:

After 3 months, my students started to launch their email communities of their own.

What does all this mean?

It means I had success stories before I launched my product.

Usually, when you launch your product, you have no customers or success stories. Nobody trusts you. You have to give away your product for free and wait for the success stories to roll in. It costs you more time and money.

Before, I’d always had this problem. But not this time. Not when I followed the #1 PMF framework.

After I finished developing the program and launched it publicly, I already had 10+ success stories and reviews like this one:

“I just want to say how AWESOME your program is. I’m excited about your attention to detail.”

“I bought different infoproducts a few times.

I was satisfied most of the time, but there was always a fly in the ointment.

It usually looked like this:

A dude comes up with an awesome methodology and starts to teach, but he hasn‘t yet created a precise learning system.

They give you tasks like ‘And now set up Adwords for this landing page.’

It looked like the correct task, and it looked like they’d told you what to do. But you faced a heap of tiny difficulties, because their step-by-step instructions were from a bird’s-eye level. In the author‘s opinion, if you couldn’t do something, you, the student, was to blame.

But your instructions are at the level of "click this button". Simple and clear.

This is very unusual – and really cool.

I see that you have worked very hard to ‘methodologize’ all your results into the instructions.”

Sergey Zuev. Founder of GA Connector
Another bonus was from the mental point of view. When you develop something and receive truly positive feedback, it inspires you and makes the process of development much more pleasant.

Another important aspect: When you follow the Lean Startup Methodology, you listen to the feedback and iterate (i.e., revise or evolve your product). The pitfall is here that you listen to everybody, even those who will never pay you.

When you listen only to real customers who pay, you stay focused on the features that impact your bottom line.

When I delivered 1-2 lessons of the course a week, I asked for feedback. I learned things I didn’t expect.

For example, my first idea was just to create a huge document with a ton of hacks. But when I started delivering the first lessons, I found that it was hard for my students to implement big chunks of information. They started to procrastinate.

So I changed my first lessons into tiny steps that my students could apply within 15 minutes. Every lesson started to consist of 3 elements:

1. A short story about my experience of a certain aspect of growth hacking.
2. How a certain hack|trick|insight affects results, and why it matters.
3. Super-detailed instructions on how to apply the hack|trick|insight.

If I created the course as I’d first imagined and then showed it to my customers, I’d have had to rebuild it from scratch. This is exactly what happened to me during my Lean Startup period. Iterations took me months and years.

With the #1 PMF framework, my “iterations” took me a day or two. That’s because I was asking real customers, listening to them and implementing their feedback during the development process - not after it.

This approach saved me a ton of time compared to the Lean Startup approach.

After I experienced awesome results with the framework numerous times, I wondered whether me and Bryan were the only dudes on Earth who used it.

As it turned out, no.

Meet Founded by a solo entrepreneur.

1. He started by creating an email community of over 20K subscribers.
2. Then he launched his product.
3. In 3 years his company was bought for $3 million.

1. They started by growing their community to 75K email subscribers.
2. Then they launched their product.
3. They achieved $100K in monthly recurring revenue in just 11 months.

1. Elena started from growing her email community to 35K subscribers.
2. She invited them to prepay on Indiegogo for a book she promised to write.
3. She brought in $1,278,387 before writing a word.

It turned out there were a lot of similar stories.

You probably noticed that all these stories have one thing in common:

They all started with EMAIL communities.

Not Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or any other social network.

Facebook is the biggest social network on Earth – but when it comes to the organic reach of “your” community, you see that while FB’s stock price grows, organic reach falls:

By 2014, Facebook’s organic reach fell by 2% to 6%:

By the end of 2015, Facebook’s organic reach was a mere 1%:

You invest your money and time into growing your Facebook community – but when you start communicating with your fans, it turns out you don’t own your community. Facebook does.

It’s the same story with all the other social networks. When they’re new, you get high organic reach. But sooner or later they have to make money, and your reach declines significantly.

Meanwhile, there is only one channel that belongs to nobody but you. This channel is not a private company. This channel is a technology – and its name is email.

While social networks can give you 1% organic reach, email newsletters show an average 30% open rate:

When I saw these numbers and compared them with my overwhelmed spam folder, I thought:
“How is this possible?”
These numbers represent newsletters that a user subscribes to personally.

If you just copy emails from elsewhere and start spamming, you will see a 0% open rate.

Here are the numbers I see in my email community, even though it’s over 2 years old:

Moreover, according to numerous studies, email is the channel that generates the highest ROI:

Other research discovered that even though email is an old technology, all generations love it 9 times more than any other channel:

In the cases above, I was describing email communities of 10,000, 20,000 people, etc. But these numbers are hard to imagine.

Have a look at this picture - This is what an email community with 20,000 email subscribers looks like:

This is a stadium packed with 20,000 people.

Imagine you’re in the middle of this stadium, selling something.

The people who are looking at you are not strangers. They like you, they trust you, they come to listen to you every week. Moreover, they love what you are selling, because they asked you to create this product – and you made their dreams come true.

Do you feel the power of your community?

So let’s sum up what the #1 PMF framework looks like:
1. Idea Community
2. “Customer development” Ask about their #1 pain
3. Build your MVP Ask to prepay for a solution
4. Invest $ in promotion Notify your community
5. Iterate = Pivot = Fail x ∞ Scale your money-making machine

Once you apply this framework, your community turns into a money-making machine. When you add automated sales funnels (more on this soon), your community turns into an AUTOMATED money-making machine.

New subscribers come in, more revenue comes out – to you. Now you’re ready to scale your real business and your profits using framework #2.

You probably know this guy:

No? This is Dave McClure. Founder of the “500 Startups” accelerator & venture fund (one of the TOP 3 in the world).

He created a growth hacking framework called AARRR. This is an awesome framework to scale anything up by 100x and more.

It looks like this:

1. Acquisition
2. Activation
3. Retention
4. Referral
5. Revenue

One of the biggest mistakes startup founders make is that they apply it before achieving product/market fit (that is, before people are paying for their product). As a result, they scale losses.

But you already know about the #1 framework. You already have your automated money-making machine (your email community).

If we mix Dave’s AARRR framework with your automated money-making email community, we will get…

The #2 framework

It looks the same as the AARRR Growth Hacking Framework by Dave McClure, but you apply it to your revenue-generating email community.

I will share with you some delicious growth hacks that worked well for me.

I grouped them according to the #2 framework.

The #2 framework: Acquisition

I tested a bunch of different channels, and these turned out to be 4 of the most efficient.

1. Posting on Facebook Groups

While people on Facebook Groups are not very active, me and my students get 100 to 1500 email subscribers from them for free.

2. Blogging around low-competition keywords is my favorite channel

It’s very different from writing blog posts around anything that strikes your fancy.
The main idea behind this approach is to write only about in-demand keywords with low competition in Google search results.

I won’t go into deep detail on how to do it in bulk. I will tell you about the simplest and fastest way on how to check out the competition. I love to use the MozBar Chrome extension for this. It’s free. Before you decide to write something based on a keyword, check the competition first.

If you see there are a lot of results with a lot of backlinks, consider another keyword if you don’t want to be the only person who reads your articles.

3. Amazon Kindle Store: my second-favorite channel

I analyzed what channels generate the most revenue for me.

It turned out that people who subscribe to my community from the Amazon Kindle Store generate 21 times more revenue than average.

This is how powerful this channel is. Probably because people go to Amazon Kindle with the mindset to buy.

This channel works only after you have at least 10K email subscribers.

The secret is simple:

3.1. You create an ebook, and on every page you place a CTA (Call-To-Action) – such as an opt-in to your newsletter
3.2. Go to and upload your ebook.
3.3. Notify your email subscribers about the book.
3.4. They buy it, write the first reviews, and your book becomes a bestseller.
3.5. Amazon Kindle promotes your bestseller among its audience.
3.6. Amazon’s audience buys your book, and converts into subscribers.

Sure, this process has been dramatically simplified, but you get the main idea.

4. If you prefer investing money more than time, the most efficient and scalable channel that I found for this is Facebook Ads

After playing around with different targeting options, it’s possible to achieve $1 per email subscriber.
The is the favorite channel of Noah Kagan (founder of He invested over $3M into acquiring email subscribers from Facebook Ads.

The #2 framework: Activation

Again, I won’t share all the tricks in detail, as this article will turn into a course :). But I’ll share with you the simplest and the most effective ones.

1. A focus on 1 Call to Action doubles your conversions into activation (= opt-in)

When you have a lot of links to click on, you lose the focus of your potential lead.
I shared a lot of studies with similar results with my community. Once they reduced number of CTAs to just one, the number of leads more than doubled.

2. Minimalism can boost your opt-in rate by 844%.

This is what it did to TheHOTH. Initially they had a popular landing page loaded with everything:

Then they switched to this crazy minimalistic landing page:

And their conversions into leads skyrocketed by 844%.

3. Social proof can boost your conversions by 50% and beyond

What is social proof? It means reviews, a client list that includes big companies, high numbers of clients, etc.

Here’s an example of what my landing page looks like and how I teach my students to create landing pages:

Minimalistic, only 1 CTA, and social proof. Pages like this convert for me and my students at a 30%-50% rate.

The #2 framework: Retention

There are a lot of tricks on how to boost your retention. Today I’ll tell you about some simple ones you can apply today.

1. Switch from beautiful, colorful HTML emails to Plain-Text emails.

For Newton, this one move alone increased their response rate by 156%.

Because the fewer HTML tags you use in your emails, the higher their deliverability rating becomes. Mailing services deliver your emails to inboxes instead of Spam folders.

This is exactly what was happening to one of my friends.
He asked me to check why his emails open rates were so miserable.

He added my email to his list, and his email ended up in my spam folder.

After he reduced the number of html tags in his message, his email stopped getting delivered to my spam folder.

2. Send emails between 9:00 and 9:30 am.

I ran an interesting experiment with over 100,000 emails.
We were trying to deliver them at different days and times.
When we sent emails between 9:00 - 9:30 (local time of a subscriber), our open rates increased by 80%.

That’s a big impact from a small change!

The #2 framework: Referral

Founders love referrals (viral traffic) the most because it’s free. Your subscribers invite their friends and your community grows without you doing anything.

I love this channel, too. Probably because 70% of my community members subscribed through the referral links. To be more precise, 8K initial subscribers invited over 19K of their friends.

So I had a lot of data to analyze and a lot of tests to run to find out what worked the best.

Today I’ll share with you the simplest hacks.

1. Incentivize people – get 10%-20% shares.

When I started to experiment with referral traffic, I just asked my subscribers something like “Please share our community with your friends”. Only around 0.2%-1% of people actually shared.

When I added an incentive – “Share and get a prize (an ebook) – my shares skyrocketed to 20%. This is the same number my students see when they add an incentive for subscribers who share.

Here’s what my subscribers see once they subscribe:

2. Add “Share via email” get 40% more subscribers

Share via email works poorly with articles – but when it comes to emails, when people read your messages from their inboxes, everything changes.

When I added “share via email” to my emails, my number of new referral subscribers increased by 40%.

3. Add a direct referral link to share - get 149% more subscribers.

This is what happened when I added this option to my emails. It can be something as simple as “Help your friend to subscribe via this link – and get an incentive!”. It boosted the number of my referral subscribers by 149%.

This one simple thing generates more referral subscribers for me than Facebook!

4. Every 2 months, offer a new incentive for inviting new subscribers

As of now, I have 5 automated viral funnels set up and running.
Every new subscriber sees them one by one.

Every new incentive generates new subscribers for me.
If my previous incentive hasn’t motivated a subscriber to share, a new one will do it.

Even if a subscriber has already shared my previous incentive, only some of his friends saw the message. The more shares that go out, the more friends see the post and join my newsletter.

Have a look at my data:

As you see, every incentive and every email that invites people to share in exchange for an incentive generates new subscribers for free.

The #2 framework: Revenue

In real business, everything boils down to revenue. When you have your in-demand product, when your community generates new sales for you through automated sales funnels, every new subscriber means more money. This is what we were doing in the previous steps.

But there are also tricks that can boost your per-subscriber revenue.

I’ll share with you some of the simplest hacks:

1. Sales + regular value = 20x fewer unsubscribes

There was a story of a guy who gained a bunch of email subscribers. Then he started to send sales emails, around 8 at a rate of 1 every 2-3 days. At the end of his funnel, he found that around 40% of people unsubscribed from his community.

He lost almost half of his community while selling to them.

I didn’t want to lose my community. So I tested different things, and here’s the one that lowered my unsubscribe rate to 2% (= 20x fewer).

The idea is simple. When people subscribe to your newsletter, they subscribe to get specific things. In my case, people want to receive growth hacks.
If I start sending them sales pitches, they will unsubscribe. This is not what they signed up for.

But if I continue to send sales emails starting with “Before I reveal today’s growth hack (at the bottom of this email)...” then make my sales pitch and add my regular growth hack at the end, people keep opening and reading my emails.

Even if they were not planning to buy anything, a headline or image can catch their eye and motivate them to buy.

My subscribers always know that in every email they open from me, they will receive one growth hack, guaranteed. This approach keeps my sales email unsubscribe rates super-low (0.3% per sales email).

2. Stories in 7 sales emails = 9x more sales

Selling through emails is very different from selling via Ads. With ads, you need to be as concise as possible because you have approximately 0.5 seconds to grab a user’s attention.

In emails, people open your content and are 100% focused on what you’re going to tell them about today.

People are ready to read. And read a lot.

Here’s my case. In May 2016, I notified my subscribers that they could buy my book on Amazon for $9.99. This generated around $750 for me.

In 2 months, I sent the same audience 7 emails with my personal stories, to sell the same book.
Result: Over $7K in sales (= 9x more sales).

Stories work awesomely well in emails.

The hardest part is knowing specifically HOW to sell. And this is what the #3 framework is about.

Every sale has to overcome 5 obstacles:

No need, No trust, No hurry, No desire, No money. If you fail to overcome at least one of these obstacles you will see 0 sales and $0 on your account, no matter how awesome your product is.

If you know how to overcome these 5 obstacles, you can make people prepay for your product. Even if it doesn’t exist.

For an IT geek, developer, and introvert, this was the hardest part for me.

I couldn’t find a framework that worked well for selling via emails. People who earn money from their email communities didn’t want to share any frameworks about this on their blogs, in their courses or even during private consultations. That sucked. A lot. I had to test every idea I’d gained from different places.

It took me 2 years to turn those pieces into

The #3 framework: How to overcome 5 obstacles selling via email

1. Value x 6 = Trust

Before launching my automated sales funnel, I wait until a subscriber opens at least 6 emails.
This means in first 6 emails, I sell nothing. A subscriber receives pure value from me. That means growth hacks only.

This helps me earn trust, right off the bat.

2. Pain stories + Value = Trust + Need

When your customers feel pain, the only way to connect with them is to tell them that you have felt the same pain. Without a story about your pain, there is no way you can connect. Once you do it, people see that you are like them. They will start to see themselves in you. This is where the deep trust lives.

When you talk about pain, those who forgot it or buried it - remember it – and start to feel the need again.

“+ value” means that at the bottom of every sales email, I share one of the regular growth hacks that the user subscribed to my newsletter for.

3. Success stories inspire + Value = Trust + Desire

Once you connect with your audience, you need to show them there are people who succeeded in overcoming their pain. Success stories inspire. People start to believe it’s possible. Their desire to know the “how” appears – and grows.

4. How the X was born + Value = Desire + Money

Instead of just describing your product and becoming boring, tell a story about how your solution was born. Talk about the obstacles you faced, how you handled them, how much money/time this solution saved.

You still don’t sell anything. You increase desire of people to get your solution. And they start to see that they will earn (or save) more money than the solution costs.

5. Open cart + Value = Money + Hurry

If you can buy a product whenever you want, there is no hurry. People postpone things.
This is why we let people buy a product (or buy it for a special price) for only a short period of time, like a day or a week or two.

This email is a pure sales pitch. You tell about all the advantages, all the results, all the value that the subscriber can get. All the stuff that’s worth more than money.

6. Cart is closing + Value = Money + Hurry

This email is similar to the “Open cart”, but it says that in 1-4 hours the offer will expire.
In my experience, the “Cart is closing” email increases sales by around 50%.

“Yes, absolutely. This is the first course I‘ve subscribed to that I‘ve found to be 100% helpful. Highly methodical, and short but focused lessons. Also, knowing that someone made all the mistakes before making eventual progress is key to the success of this course.”

Clyde Johnson from the United Kingdom.
“Everybody talks about step-by-step info, but Aladdin is the first one who really walks the talk and delivers step-by-step. And he uses a lot of smart tricks to motivate you to keep moving forward.”

Martin Hunt, an entrepreneur and investor from the Netherlands.
“Of course. This kind of step-by-step course is really hard to find in the market – and even if you do find one, the price will be very expensive.”

What is the #1 thing you like most about the lessons?

“The best thing about the course is how, by doing little step-by-step tasks sent by email, you will slowly (if you choose) but surely consistently build your email community system. I find it hard to follow through with programs and courses, but this one drives itself.”

Roderic Andrews from France.
“Actions speak louder than words. I‘ve already recommended the course to my friend, and he has joined. ;)”

What is the #1 thing you like most about the lessons?

“The main thing about this course is that Aladdin provides clear and concrete actions that lead you to maximum results. And what undoubtedly persuaded me is one of the most important rules of sales – the value of the product should be higher than its price. And that rule applies to this program. I got 100 times more than expected. Just wow!”

Yosef Krasyk from Israel.”
